Installing pidgin 2.6 with voice/video chat support on ubuntu the easiest way

Pidgin 2.6 has brought voice and video chat support for the linux users. I figured out an easy way to install pidgin 2.6 with video/voice chat on ubuntu.

  1. Remove your exiting pidgin .System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package ManagerSearch for pidgin.

    Right click pidgin -> Mark for Removal

  2. Next we have to add GPG key for the repository by typing following command in the terminal.
    sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A1F196A8
  3. Adding new repositorySystem > Administration > Software Sources and select Third-Party Software tab and click ADD. And Simply Copy-Paste the following Repo (depending on the version of Ubuntu you use).
    • For ubuntu Jaunty
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
    • For ubuntu Karmic
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
  4. After adding the lines , close the window . Reload if prompt to reload appears.
  5. Now since the repository for pidgin is installed ,to install pidgin 2.6Go toSystem -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

    Search for pidgin.

    Right click pidgin -> Mark for Installation

    Apply Changes.

  6. All this and your pidgin client with video / voice support is installed. Enjoy.
