Minimize windows session running from Citrix ICA Client (=Citrix Receiver)

by manojgumber

Many of us use Citrix ICA Client on ubuntu to access our office workstations. When you start Citrix ICA Client, it always runs in full screen. And unfortunately the same windows shortcut do longer works with Ubuntu Citrix client.

However this is another keyboard shortcut that you can use to minimize the Citrix Session –

Use the following keyboard shortcuts in order –

  • Ctrl + F2
  • Alt + F9

This should minimize the Citrix Session.

Installing Oracle JDK/JRE 7 on ubuntu

by manojgumber

If you have tried to install JDK via Ubuntu Software Center, It will show only OpenJDK/JRE. Oracle JDK is the most widely used development kit for java. Actually it is fairly easy to install the Oracle JDK on Ubuntu.

The guys at AskUbuntu have put up a fabulous response and it works without any issue.

Deluge – My favorite torrent client on ubuntu

by manojgumber

The one thing I have missed the most from the windows world is utorrent. It would not be an exaggeration if I say that utorrent is the best torrent client. Linux port of utorrent is in beta since forever with no hopes of a stable version.

I have tried a couple of torrent clients on ubuntu and it is disappointing to see paucity of  a good torrent client for linux.

  • Azureus or Vuze –  It is the bulkiest of all the linux torrent clients. Nothing slows your system as much as Vuze.
  • Tranmission – I appreciate the simplicity and speed of transmission but this has too basic interface. The thing most lacking is any interface to monitor the progress of your torrents. All you get is a single percentage completed bar. It would be useful to see the  status of individual files, the peers, tracker status and error messages.

Finally its Deluge to the rescue. It appears to be only torrent client on par with utorrent. It has

  • Good user interface (almost identical to utorrent)
  • Gui is fast. Does not slow down system.
  • Array of tweaking options from basic to advanced.

I find strange that not many people are aware of Deluge but it is really a good utorrent alternative for ubuntu.

Setting proxy settings for Amarok under GNOME

by manojgumber

If you are using amarok under Gnome in a proxy environment, I am sure you will be troubled finding proxy settings for amarok in the Configuration of Amarok . Here is a way to specify proxy setting for amarok in Gnome.

  • Clear any proxy setting if specified in Amarok Configuration page
  • Edit file  ~/.kde/share/config/kioslaverc and append the following lines-
    [Proxy Settings][$i]
  • Save this file and restart Amarok. Now Amarok will recognize your proxy settings.

Testdisk – A Great Recovery Tool

by manojgumber

You must be wondering why I am appreciating this tool this much. Well …this tool is worth it. I saved me from a hell of trouble. Actually due to some unknown reasons , my partition table got corrupted . My one partition was lost and rest were fine. The partition which was lost ( it had some important documents) , different tools showed it as free space.

At ubuntu forums, a fellow suggested to use this tool and it worked awesome. It detected my old partition table and I could recover my lost partition.
